Through the district's partnership with the Mason City Police Department for our Resource Officer, we are sharing a message from Chief Sean Kelly to our community.
Spring is here! With the arrival of warmer weather and longer evenings, there is an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic, including skateboards and scooters, both manual and electric. The Mason City Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and kids of some basic rules of the road that apply to the streets and sidewalks in Mason City.
Sidewalks are for feet and roads are for tires! This is especially true in the business district (one block both east and west of Main Street on Pine, Chestnut, and Elm Streets), where we have a city ordinance that will be enforced, prohibiting all bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and any other type of wheeled vehicle from traveling on the sidewalk. Outside of the business district, only bicycles are allowed on sidewalks, and they must give way to pedestrians. Scooters are not allowed on sidewalks or on state highways. Chestnut Street is a state highway, and by state law, scooters, manual or electric, are prohibited from usage on a state highway.
Stop signs and yield signs aren’t just for vehicles; they must be obeyed by cyclists and scooters as well. The same goes for lane usage. Make sure you are on the right side of the road. If you are traveling in a group, do not travel six wide, blocking both lanes. Please respect others on the road and stay in your lane.
If you ride at night, bicycles and scooters must be equipped with an operating headlight with either a red taillight or red reflector. While helmets are not required, they are strongly recommended. Also recommended are side mirrors, which can be attached to handlebars. Parents, please teach your kids the hand signals for turning left, right, and stopping so they can communicate their intentions to motorists.
Summer break is right around the corner, and we want to encourage kids to get out of the house and to have fun! But please do so safely and respectfully.
