8th Graders Learn About College and Career Readiness

Mrs. Giesler's 8th Grade ELA classes began the school year with a college and career readiness unit. The unit is a part of the District's Capstone Project.

Students used a computer program called Xello to match them with possible careers based on their interests and skills. Each student chose one career of their liking. Students researched their careers, created a flyer using text features, explored workplace skills to be successful in their career and as a student, wrote an essay explaining why the skills will be important in their career and as well as a student, and presented a speech on their career in Speech classes.

To end the unit, they visited the Annual Career Spark at the Peoria Civic Center where students got to explore several possible Central Illinois careers by doing many hands-on activities.
