Illini Central Sets Dates for Graduation/Promotion

8th Grade Promotion May 18th - High School Graduation is May 20th

by Ed Jodlowski

February 22, 2012

As I am sure you are all aware, this year has been unseasonable for us in terms of the weather.  Because the month of February and sometimes March can be cruel, the Board of Education waited until the end of February to make the decision about a date for graduation.  We were under the impression that we were going to need to use at least one or two snow days, but as of now, we have not and probably will not use any snow days.

Originally, as was discussed at the board meeting last Thursday night, a consensus was reached that the dates would be May 27 for high school graduation and May 18 for 8th grade promotion.  After this discussion, there was some concern presented by teachers about these dates.  Their concern had to do with the difficulty for families who had to come into town for both the promotion and graduation and there being nine days between them.  It certainly does provide a hardship for those families.  The high school teachers are willing to give finals to seniors on May 15 and May 16 which is essentially just a day or two before they would be given regularly.  We will develop a schedule for that and communicate it with the students.  We will then have graduation practice on Friday, May 18, at 10:00 a.m.  Graduation will be scheduled officially (no changes, I promise) for Sunday, May 20, at 2:00 p.m.

I have talked with senior parents who scheduled the senior class party for Saturday, May 19, and I know many of you have received a letter regarding this event; however, they are willing to change that date given the change in plans.  We truly apologize for changing these dates as I have communicated to some parents about the possible date of May 27th, but I believe that this is in the best interest for the students and the Illini Central community.
